Third-Thursday Speaker Series   [note: place and time updated]
Manhattan, 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Dr. Glen Z. Brooks, MD, founder and Medical Director of New York Ketamine Infusions, LLC, will speak on two topics:
1) The connection between alcoholism and genetics. It had been said that alcoholism runs in families. How true is this? More and more evidence supports this claim, such as a finding by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry that the children of alcoholic parents are at four times at risk of developing a drinking problem than those of non-abusers. However the actual genetic link has yet to be identified. Are other factors, such as environment and personal choice, the actual cause? We hope to determine the cause of this disease so that we may prevent it.
2) Ketamine therapy for PTSD arising from childhood trauma. Ketamine is an anesthetic drug known for its hallucinogenic effect, which gives it a reputation as a party drug. It is also capable of preventing a great deal of pain and discomfort, and recent research shows that it is effective in treating depression, alcoholism, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Could Ketamine Infusion Therapy be the future of antidepressants?
•Dr. Brooks, a licensed anesthesiologist in New York and Connecticut, has been a General Medical Officer with the United States Navy in Bahrain, completed his residency and fellowship at Harvard Medical School, has been as assistant professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, and Director of Anesthesia at Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan. He currently practices in Lower Manhattan.
